Congrats Florida on winning everything in sight April 3, 2007

Pretty impressive what U of Florida did:  two NCAA basketball championships and one football championship in between. The damn athletic director down there deserves a cookie and a half.

It will be interesting to see what happens now with the Gators. Is there any chance of Horford, Brewer, and Noah coming back to try and three-peat.? That would be something else. You would have to go back to the late 60s/early 70s for that kind of dominance. And what about Donovan. Kentucky is pushing awefully hard to get him, and would think it would be very tempting to come here. The reason I say that is that even though Im sure Donovan was happy for the football team to win, no coach wants to share the glory. In Lexington, if you bring the Cats to a championship, you are a god. In Gainesville, they might love ya, but its still a football town in a football state.

True, UK fans generally suck. We think we deserve the best, and maybe we do with our vaunted history. But we are assholes through and through i.e. Tubby. Great coach and he got ran out of here. I wish him the best in Minnesota, but I am glad he is gone, just dont think he was right for our system. Donovan would be: an all-around great coach, and can recruit with the best (see players listed above, and thats just half the team).

My prediction: the players head for the NBA, happy with their two titles, and Donovan joins the Wildcat-blue. Good luck to both teams, they are going to need it.

Couple things happened recently and I just wanted to put my two cents in:

First off, the Schaub deal. Atlanta traded Matt Schaub to the Texans for two 2nd round draft picks. I dont think either team is really going to benefit from this deal.  The Texans believe for some reason that David Carr was the problem when he wasnt really even a factor in their misery. True, he is not very good, but then again, the whole isnt very good. The defense is coming together, slowly albeit, but they are a team that is building towards the future. Schaub could turn out to be very good, but in the offense, especially with that horrid O-line, doesnt really stand a chance. Atlanta signed Redman, who played for Petrino, to back up Vick. Vick is in the waning years of his career, and tends to take a lot of hits when he is scampering all over the field. And nothing against Vick, but if Schaub had the chance to start there full time, Atlanta might have even become a factor in the playoff race. Texans will need those two picks to develop and Atlanta will need a decent backup.

Second, Jaws coming to MNF. Hellz ya!! I am a big fan of Ron Jaworski: the man just knows his stuff. I am glad ESPN ditched Thiesman over Kornhieser.  Tony is very knowledgeable and even has a personality, which is very rare in sports broadcasting nowadays. Tirico is a good play-by-play man, and hard to imagine Jaws and Korn-hole not clicking. MNF just got better.

Third, the NFL making instant replay permanent. I am very wishy-washy on instant replay. It does seem to help on key situations, but I think it takes some of the human element out the game. The refs still make bad calls, that cant be overturned, and even with replay, they tend to make the wrong call. Maybe if they invest more money in the equipment, which they are supposed to do, the it will get better. Only time will tell.

Fourth, Briggs-Chicago-Washington. First off, Briggs is being a damn baby. Deal with the tag, every other player does. Its a part of the game, and the NFLPA agreed to it, so should you. Secondly, no way will Chicago send Briggs to Washington even if the deal is super sweet. Most teams dont even want to move up in the draft, due to money concerns and/or lack of talent in the first round. Also, it would empower future players who have a gripe. Just don’t see it happening. I guess it will be up to Briggs on what happens next.

Great movies March 19, 2007

First off, 300 is incredible. The music, the visual story-telling will blow your ass wide open (Dont be surprised if Zack Snyder ends of being one of the premiere directors of his time). Seen it twice in the theater, and more than likely, there will be a 3rd time. It was a fun, kick-ass action rockfest that at the core, reminds us just how doughy and lame modern men are. Felt like a big ol’ biotch when I left, but I did feel like I wanted to change also.

Stranger than Fiction was probably one of the most underrated movies of last fall. Will Ferrel is just great, along with the rest of the cast. It was an original story, with great characters, and Marc Forster (director) did a fantastic job of bringing it to the screen. Harold Crick is a loveable lead who you just want the best for, and who is such a good guy, and you (the viewer) were going to feel pained if/when he dies. Great movie, feel-good movie of the past five years.

Dont want to talk to much about this one, because it just wouldnt be fair to the people who havent seen it yet, but The Prestige is one of the greatest who-dunnits in a long time. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale (awesome, awesome actor) bring to life a story of two rival magicians with a very raw past. And they will stop at nothing to know each other’s secrets and to be the best showman out there, no matter who gets hurt. A great story that leave you wondering until the very end and then you go, “Holy shit…”. Christopher Nolan does it again, and dont imagine he will be stopping anytime soon.

I feel very fortunate to be in a time that seems to be ushering in all sorts of great filmmakers. You got the ones who can do awesome action movies (Sam Raimi, Bryan Singer, Zack Snyder), dramas (Wes Anderson, Marc Forster, Cameron Crowe) and the ones that can do it all (Christopher Nolan, David Fincher). And lets not forget the comedies, of course (Todd Phillips).

Been awhile since Ive posted anything, and to tell the truth, been awhile since Ive done much of anything. As you may or may not know, no longer donating my kidney, at least, not for now. Shaun received one from a cadaver, little did anyone know that he was still on the donor list. Good news is that it is going great: seems the kidney is taking, and he is recovering very well.

It threw me off a little bit, which I feel some what guilty even talking about, after everything Shaun has gone through. Spent so much time preparing for it, and then it not happening, is a bit of a mind-fuck. Went into some wierd depression after, which I have a hard time explaining, but I didnt want to talk to anybody or do anything. I guess I didnt want to have to explain over and over why it didnt happen after all the hoopla going into it. Time to start looking at the bright side as if this was just maybe not meant to be, and I still got my kidneys (and they are all mine, fuck if somebody else wanted them).

I used to dread going to work. Any work, didnt matter, didnt want to go. Probably the lazy bum that is in me, but I always figured it was best to be able to do what I want to do. Well, with the surgery looming oh-so closely, Ive decided to take a couple weeks off before, just to do my own thing and chill. Its been a week now of “chilling”, and Ill tell you what, it can get awefully boring. I know, its only been a week, and Ive already hit this roadblock. And its strange for me to think this, because I am straight up LAAZZZYYY.  I do miss going to work: not necessarily because of the actual job, but I do miss mingling with my co-workers and cutting it up. Dont get me wrong, I am enjoying this time by doing pretty much whatever I want to do, but I do miss social interaction. All I have really been doing is taking care of the dog, playing games, watching movies, and hanging out with the little lady. Its been nice, but its just not what its cracked up to be. I do plan on being more productive after the surgery, but until then, I will continue to relax, and think about what the future holds for me after the surgery. Will it be life changing? Probably, but not to the degree of what myself and others think it will be. So after, I will continue on with my life’s journey, but until then…..zzzzzzz

Why is this man hated so much? He is the butt of many, many jokes, and I don’t totally see why. True, he has made a couple stinkers (The Postman is a glaring boo-boo on his resume, and it probably would have helped if he didn’t direct it) but overall, I enjoy his collection. I recently watched “The Guardian” and I really enjoyed it. It brought to light what the un-heralded Coast Guard does for our country, has intense movie moments, and an overall good storyline. True, he isn’t the most emotional actor, but he is careful in choosing movies that don’t ask that of him. He knows his limits. And I don’t care what anybody says, “Waterworld” was an enjoyable movie. And lets not forget he directed and starred in one of the most important movies about the United State’s past, “Dances with Wolves.” If you didn’t like that movie, then something is just wrong with you.

We got final approval yesterday for the kidney transplant, which is going from me to Shaun. The surgery will be March 8th, in Dallas, Texas, at Baylor Hospital. I am back to being very excited.  When we finally got the green light, I was a little shell-shocked at first, just because we have been waiting so long for the final OK. Then I got really nervous, and I can honestly say that was the first time that happened. The brevity of the situation hit me, and I actually thought about how big this surgery is, and how lifestyles are going to need to change (all for the better though). I will need to take care of myself, watch what I eat, what kind of over-the-counter drugs I use (no NSaids), and maintain just an overall healthy diet.

This is so worth it though. My sister is so excited, and I imagine Shaun feels a tremendous amount of relief. From here, lives only get better.

For the people that know me in real life are aware that I am trying to donate my kidney to my brother-in-law. Some day I plan on putting the long, long road it has been to get to this point, but that day is not today.  Good news is that it looks like we are actually going to find out if I can on Monday. After many meetings and many tests, we are almost there. It looks like it is going to happen (knock on wood), official won’t come down til they call me.  The meeting to determine if I can was on Friday, but I guess they enjoy watching us squirm, and trust me, there has been a whole lotta squirmin’.

Shaun, I really hope Im calling you Monday with good news.

NEW YORK (Reuters) — New Yorkers who blithely cross the street listening to an iPod or talking on a cell phone could soon face a $100 fine.New York State Sen. Carl Kruger says three pedestrians in his Brooklyn district have been killed since September upon stepping into traffic while distracted by an electronic device. In one case bystanders screamed “watch out” to no avail.

Kruger says he will introduce legislation on Wednesday to ban the use of gadgets such as Blackberry devices and video games while crossing the street.

“Government has an obligation to protect its citizenry,” Kruger said in a telephone interview from Albany, the state capital.

“This electronic gadgetry is reaching the point where it’s becoming not only endemic but it’s creating an atmosphere where we have a major public safety crisis at hand.”

Tech-consuming New Yorkers trudge to work on sidewalks and subways like an army of drones, appearing to talk to themselves on wireless devices or swaying to seemingly silent tunes.

“I’m not trying to intrude on that,” Kruger said. “But what’s happening is when they’re tuning into their iPod or Blackberry or cell phone or video game, they’re walking into speeding buses and moving automobiles. It’s becoming a nationwide problem.”

Is it me, or is that just a bit ridiculous. New York seems like it trys way too hard into being a super-safe city for its residents. If this bill passes, I will be disappointed (yet again) in government and our elected officials. How can you possibly have a law saying you can’t use your IPod, Blackberry, or whatnot when crossing the street. Seriously? Here is an idea, New York. You can start a new agency, HWFDA, also known as Hand-Walkers for Dumb Asses. This agency can walk all your precious little NYers to work, home, to school, etc. That way, they dont have any responsibility!! Its perfect!! Oh crap, I here people get hit by cars on bikes also. Ban them. People fall off bridges. No more. Get rid of them.

Or we can just let people be human beings, and be responsible for their own well-being.
